The 'Celebrate Woolwich Common Estate' event took place on the 20th November 2024, at Woolwich Common Community centre.
Doors were opened to all local residents, businesses and services to mingle and get acquainted with one another.
We some informative presentations by community champions and and entertaining musical performance by a local community group led by Taru Arts.
There has been massive improvements to the environment. The ongoing clean up the estate project has continued to achieve great results. Some noteworthy mentions are:
10.5 tonnes of rubbish moved,
2 new community gardens,
20 resident volunteers & 20 volunteers from 02 and RiverLink participated
3 jobs created
Key statistics from a evaluation survey done on part of the community noted:
54% - were aware of the project
Over 75% noticed an improvement around estate
25% participated in the project - clear up litter and community meetings
Did it make a difference? Here are some quotes people had to say:
"We made a lot of difference last summer and got a lot of local kids involved"
"Helpful, actively improving the community that had been neglected ..."
"Community spirit / bonding made between resident."
"I could see that I had improved the environment, and I was part of something bigger than just my contribution"
"noticed improvements such as it being much cleaner and not as much glass everywhere"
"seen cleaning up around the estate, estate become cleaner, people behaving better"
There were also those who didn’t think it made a difference… there will be differences in opinion but the comments above show you some really positive outcomes.
